Caruso II, a long-time Canyon Country restaurant, is located on the project site, which is on the northeast corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, according to City officials.

The City of Santa Clarita expects to begin construction in the spring, and the new Canyon Country Community Center is tentatively scheduled to open in late 2020.

The new center will replace the existing, temporary community center on Flying Tiger Drive at Sierra Highway.

The demolition, including the foundations and hardscape areas, will take approximately two to three weeks and reusable parts will be separated and sent to a recycling center, according to officials.

Caruso II was the last privately-owned property to be acquired and is now being removed in order for the City to move forward with implementing the Community Center Master Plan, adopted by the Santa Clarita City Council in June 2016.

The new facility will serve as a landmark welcoming people to Canyon Country. The center will be a community hub offering cultural enrichment in the form of classes, activities, programs and more, for both youth and adults. It will also have an outdoor event space and offer workshops for personal and professional development.

The City continues to work on completing the construction documents for this project and anticipates the project will search for a contractor this fall.

  1. Yes indeed, a new landmark welcoming people to Canyon Country. Don’t cha know everyone wants to visit the new senior center! It’ll be newest and neatest tourist attraction to hit the SCV since the beautiful downtown Newhall 6-story parking structure. I can’t wait!

Seriously though, good on the city for caring about it’s seniors.

But what about the long-time family-owned landmark restaurant that has been a tradition for so many years? Will they be relocated or just go out as a pile of rubble as I saw it on Wednesday?

  2. Did they take this property by eminent domain and throw everyone out? Just wondering. And wondering why the reporter didn’t say anything about this.

And why does the commentor above think this will be a senior center? A community center, per other in the city, is focused on youth. Sierra highway is a pretty busy street to put a community center on. but oh well, that’s our planning department for you.

    • Fair question Waterwatcher, Will E- I must have been having a senior moment.

But still- Nothing in the SCV can top the excitement and sheer beauty of the highly esteemed and much-admired beautiful downtown Newhall six-story parking structure with its unparalleled views.. THAT’S a destination worthy of even time travel!

The restaurant issue remains unanswered tho- What about Caruso’s?

  3. It’s a shame that such a fantastic restaurant had to be destroyed. They had just re-vamped the restaurant and it was so beautiful, the food was fantastic. It was such a welcome addition to canyon Country, and now it’s a pile of rubble. Will the city help the owners re-open it? Why didn’t the article talk about that? We need more restaurants like Osteria Caruso! Why couldn’t they build around the existing business? It’s a shame that the city kicks out established small businesses.

  4. …its a Community Center going in at the Canyon Country location, the new senior center is off of Golden Valley Road north.

  5. I can remember carusos first day of business I was there first customer and ate there for many years even after I moved up to Palmdale what a lousy poor job on reporting this story ? Such a hack! I’m not even a journalist and could have put this in much better perspective.so editor in chief do you think you can fill in the blanks and update us on the restaurant ? I remember it used to be Newhall land and Farm that did all the shady property developement when I lived there seems now the city itself is behind so much questionable and never answered for ( at least to the public’s view ) property aquirings a main reason I moved away from there ? Fire the staff get some reporters that DO KNOW HOW TO REPORT A STORY NOT JUST PART OF IT hmmmmmm? Evasive reporting the next big thing ?
