Monolito Guerra, 29, of Newhall, allegedly shot and wounded Deputy Albert White in 2017 at an apartment complex on Bottletree Lane.

Guerra is being charged with three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, five counts of assault with a firearm and one count each of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, possession of firearm by a felon with four priors and injuring a spouse, cohabitant, fiancé, boyfriend, girlfriend or child’s parent, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

“The charges include allegations that he used a handgun, caused great bodily injury and that he personally used a firearm — a .357 revolver,” said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the District Attorney’s office.

On Nov. 28, 2017, a woman had called authorities to report that someone pointed a gun at her as she was getting out of her vehicle, LASD officials reported.

The assailant fled near the pool area of the apartment complex, and deputies also learned that there was possibly a second suspect involved.

“When deputies arrived on scene, they contacted the victim and began a search for the suspects,” according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.

Guerra was located in the parking area near the pool, and allegedly fired his gun toward four deputies. White was shot in the neck during the shootout.

The 29-year-old deputy suffered a “through-and-through” wound to his neck. The four-year veteran of the department was rushed to a hospital by fellow deputies and released the next day.

“A quarter of an inch either way, it would have taken out his carotid (artery) or his spine,” said Sheriff Jim McDonnell. “We’re just very thankful that the results were what they were.”

The gunman was wounded at least once in the upper body, the Sheriff’s department reported.

He was transferred to a medical jail ward and booked on suspicion of parole violation.

At the time of the arrest, McDonnell said the suspect was a parolee who had been released from prison in October.

Through their investigation, Homicide detectives learned that Guerra was initially arrested on Oct. 15, 2014. He was sentenced to state prison on Feb. 2, 2016, according to authorities.

Guerra was serving a five-year prison term for evading arrest, a four-year prison term for a secondary charge of evading arrest, and an eight-month prison term for assault with a deadly weapon, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez.

Guerra was later paroled to Santa Clarita on Oct. 19. The deputy-involved shooting occurred less than six weeks later, authorities said.

Guerra is currently being held in lieu of more than $5.7 million bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

His next preliminary hearing setting date is scheduled for Oct. 4.
