Over a five-day period, students collected items for their “30 Things” contest entry, donating a variety of items to 30 different charities and organizations in the city.

Out of 20 submissions from schools throughout Santa Clarita, Charles Helmers Elementary made an impression on city leaders.

“You made a difference,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “We are so proud and honored to have all of you learning about your city and doing great things to help your community.”

Santa Clarita City Council Members, Saugus Union School District board members and city staff celebrated the win at a school wide party Friday.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and Los Angeles County firefighters showed off their vehicles to the students, who could explore the firetrucks and patrol cars used throughout the city.

“It’s a great honor. It shows just how tight knit our community is,” said Principal Pete Bland. “I think it was a neat opportunity, not only for us, but also seeing all of the other schools that participated and how it really brought together school communities in all the other areas.”

As a result of being chosen as the contest winners, the students were able to enjoy a party with a DJ, food, cake, activities and received a special prize from Sammy Clarita, the city’s mascot.

“There’s another city contest,” said Bland “I sent it off to our PTA president and they’re hard at work getting it set up, so our students will hopefully participate in this next one too.”
