“The health and safety of members and their children is of the utmost importance at 24 Hour Fitness,” according to a statement issued by the gym to KHTS AM 1220 regarding the allegations. “We work to ensure that all of our club locations are in compliance with local health and safety regulations.”

A former member of the 24 Hour Fitness in Santa Clarita who asked to remain anonymous reached out to KHTS AM 1220 about the matter.

The anonymous individual said she cancelled her membership after learning about the allegedly unsanitary conditions from an employee of the gym’s “Kid’s Club,” a supervised environment where children from 6 months to 11 years old can play while a family member works out.

Management reportedly told the individual that 24 Hour Fitness has been getting complaints about the disease allegedly being contracted at their Santa Clarita location since Wednesday.

“The management (told me they) went in and soaked all of the toys and did a deep cleaning,” said the individual.

24 Hour Fitness says its team members “consistently strive” to maintain club cleanliness standards, and also conduct thorough cleanings throughout the day.

“I have a feeling that if they did not clean (the equipment) properly, they did now,” said the former member. “I just hope that they take care of this and take it really seriously.”

24 Hour Fitness, located at 18645 Vía Princessa, declined comment.

  1. I cancelled my membership too
I got a skin rash from the handles on the machines

  2. I have observed the cleaning crew using the same dirty rag on foot pedals and handlbars. Further, the paper towel dispensers are almost always empty.

  3. This place is always so filthy. I’ve complained numerous times to management and they do nothing about it. It’s time to head over to LA fitness.

  4. As a long-time member of the 24-Hour Fitness in Santa Clarita, I’ve observed on many occasions the unsanitary conditions that exist there, especially as it relates to the use of towels to cover and/or wipe off equipment used by members. Much fewer than half of the people working out there use towels and often leave equipment dripping with sweat after their use. Each time I complained to staff about the lack of compliance with gym rules that “require” the use of towels and the subsequent risks of spreading infection, the staff told me the rules can’t be enforced because members get upset when asked to comply. I’ve since joined another local gym that is much cleaner and where members regularly use towels to cover. Equipment hygiene is much more important for preventing skin infections by more serious pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) than for Coxsackie virus which can spread fairly easily among children in daycare settings.

  5. Any woman in Santa Clarita that is serious about fitness and wants a sanitary fitness environment should head over to CARDIOGIRL FITNESS in Valencia. I’ve been to every gym out here. Far and away the best! Amazing group classes! Female only! Immaculately clean!

  6. They just got done painting, but if you look up at the return grilles, they did not clean them before they painted. They are always dirty. Which tells you they do not change the air filters, They do have someone cleaning but your right the water is dirty. One big thing is that do not enforce their rules. Rule 10 you need a towel to enter the gym and must wipe down the machines.

  7. I have been to this 24hr fitness in Santa Clarita and just like all other 24hr fitness, they are all filthy and run down. I usually work out at the new 24hour fitness Super Sport in San Clemente, CA, and this gym is about 2 years old. The locker rooms are filthy, especially the shower rooms and there is always somebody’s sweat on all the equipment. Gyms are just gross in general but I have never seen the staff clean or wipe down the gym for as long as I have been working out at this gym and I work out 6 days / week. Sometimes twice a day. The probably clean it only once a day in the mornings when I don’t go because at noon-3 or 5-8pm, I have never seen a cleaning crew w the exception of them cleaning the towels.

  8. I bought a 2 year membership to 24 HR fitness from the Costco across the way, and I love this gym. I’ve often seen see a janitor wiping down the place. I believe them when they say they follow all the sanitation laws.

On the flip side, I can’t stand working out along side germophobes. We’re human beings. We sweat. Get over it. I’m sorry this gym is going to hurt financially because of one germophobic employee being picky.

I think the overall environment of this gym will be better in the long run. Best wishes to all the people canceling their membership.

    • I couldn’t agree with you more Naji!! I LOVE this gym and it is so awesome along with all the amazing people that work there!!
In general, gyms are NOT for germophobes. Any gym you go to will have equipment that people have sweat on and swam in. Get over it! Use the spray that they provide! It’s meant to KILL THE GERMS PEOPLE BRING IN!
As for the kids club…I have NEVER had a problem. My kids LOVE this place and all the people there.
Good luck to all you germophobes out there…make sure to use a glove when opening your car door, or any door for that matter, actually you may just want to put a full body suit on to protect from all the crazy germs in our world.

  9. L A Fitness on Newhall is a filthy dump. There are no cleaning supplies accessible or out and promoted to use. Even the classes room is dirty, and the mats and weights. There should be signs to remind people to wipe down equipment. When you ask the young people at the counter where the cleaning stuff is, they look at you like you have two heads.

  10. I cancelled my membership also. I rarely get sick but I seem to get sick more often when I workout at that location

  11. Gosh you all have it correct, 24 hour fitness is the wore managed club i have ever been to. the staff is very lazy at all locations and they do not repair anything. I am in Moreno Valley, CA and have had to leave the gym because of members swimming in jockey shorts constantly at the pool. (only reason i joined) and washing naked in the common shower in full view of the gym over the last 18 months have complained 5 different times and no one does anything.

As far as cleanliness our matrons sit in the sauna eating fruit and reading -not cleaning- gross hair and bloody band aides in the ladies showers, toilets always dirty and scales always broken. would serve them right if every one quite and did a class action

  12. I go to this gym about once a week. I use shower everything I go. Never had a problem. I also know that any public place I go in don’t touch something then not wash hands ect. Be careful were ever you go. Kids get sick easy, I used to work at a camp we are extra careful to keep everything clean. I’m going to keep using this gym for now.
