CHP Newhall is adding extra enforcement to their patrols with seatbelt and car seat violations in mind, according to CHP Newhall officials.

“We’ve added traffic enforcement for seatbelt laws and car seat violations,” said Josh Greengard, a spokesman for the Newhall California Highway Patrol office. “We have enforcement going on that will be added throughout the week.”

Parents and caregivers can learn the proper use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts by contacting their local CHP office, according to officials.

CHP stations around California, including Newhall, have year-round, appointment-based training to ensure parents and caregivers are properly installing car seats.

“All the CHP stations have certified technicians to install car seats properly,” Greengard said.

“Our technicians are also officers (who help) to install car seats.”

California law requires that all children under the age of two who weigh under 40 pounds and are under 40 inches tall must ride in a rear-facing car seat, according to a recent CHP news release.

All children under the age of eight must ride in the back seat in an age-appropriate safety seat. It is also recommended that all children ride in the back seat until the age of 13.

“Children rely on their parents and caregivers to keep them safe during every single trip,” CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “The CHP will help you make sure you are using the right car seat, installed correctly. The consequences of misused or unused car seats can be disastrous.”
