Elevate Church congregation members believe the body recovered from a hillside near Pico Canyon Road in Stevenson Ranch Saturday was 21-year-old Matthew Weiss, who was reported missing in July.

“Our church rallied 60 volunteers and hit the community on Saturday, August 18,” Elevate Church said in a Facebook post. “We specifically sent a team to search the same location police did previously, and by God’s amazing grace, we found Matthew.”

Weiss had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

An ID confirmation through official channels may take time, as the body was so decomposed that neither the approximate age nor gender of the individual was able to be determined by officials on scene.

“The body was completely unidentifiable,” said Sgt Eric Metten with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner confirmed Tuesday they are still treating the body as a “John Doe,” which is the name assigned to any unidentified body.
