The city conducted an online survey with residents between Nov. 9 through Dec. 22, 2017 to gather information from the public regarding community needs.
The survey was implemented as an annual study as part of the Community Development Block Grant program that provides funds yearly to Santa Clarita.
Every year, over $1 million is awarded to City of Santa Clarita’s Community Development department from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are provided to assist lower-income residents in areas of decent housing, a suitable living environment and expanded economic opportunities.
Links to the survey were sent to many local organizations, agencies and service providers in the Santa Clarita Valley to reach as many residents as possible.
City of Santa Clarita officials reported having nearly 500 responses from individual participants.
Residents who participated in the survey were asked to provide some personal information and to consider the following:
- The needs of the community and how it can be improved;
- Rate the relative need level for each of the items by checking the box that best applies.
Community members that accessed the online survey were asked to rate the importance of nearly 50 communal programs and services.
Data provided by residents was compiled by City of Santa Clarita officials and recorded in the 2018-2019 Community Needs Assessment Summary.
The summary was published on the city’s website for the public to access.
Based on survey results, City staff were able to determine what activities deserve the most attention according to residents.
Santa Clarita residents casted votes, placing 13 city activities, opportunities and services at the top of their lists.
Residents rated Anti-Crime Programs, Homeless and Mental Health Services as the top three community services that could be improved, according to survey results.
Santa Clarita City Council members are expected to conduct a public hearing Tuesday at 6 p.m. to address the results and include them into the 2018-2019 Annual Action Plan.
The city council will be presented with this annual plan during the public hearing, which is open to the public.
