Santa Clarita Valley residents may order complimentary oak trees through Nov. 7.

The City of Santa Clarita is offering complimentary California native oak trees to residents in honor of the community’s annual “Oaktober” celebration, according to a news release. Residents can contact the city through Nov. 7 to order the free trees, which are exempt from the City’s Oak Tree Preservation and Protection Ordinance.

Santa Clarita is home to tens of thousands of native oaks, which clean our air, shade our neighborhoods and contribute to our community’s beautiful landscape,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “By planting these free, low-water trees, residents can add to the city’s urban forest and make a big environmental impact in their own back yards.”

Residents can choose from two varieties of trees, the evergreen Coast Live Oak tree and the deciduous Valley Oak tree. The 15 gallon, drought-tolerant trees will be available in single or multiple trunk forms, according to city officials. The trees require ample room to grow and develop properly, so residents are encouraged to select a spot in their yard with plenty of space for planting.

The complimentary oak trees are exempt from the city’s Oak Tree Preservation and Protection Ordinance, which requires property owners to obtain permits for pruning, encroachments and the removal of oak trees located within the city, according to the news release.

Homeowners who order and register the free “Oaktober” trees with the city will be exempt from the ordinance and any required removal permits, according to city officials.

Interested residents must pre-order their tree and schedule a pick-up time by calling the City at (661) 294-2567.
