College of the Canyons Canyon Country campus officials welcome students and families to participate in its biannual “Star Party” event, where spectators are introduced to the beautiful complexity of the universe and the educational programs that immerse students in it.

The spring 2015 Star Party will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 1, and will expand on the event’s winning tradition with a variety of interactive displays, including a catapult launching competition hosted by a handful of on-campus clubs and organizations.

“The Star Party has become a beloved community event at the Canyon Country campus, celebrating so much of what we love about this beautiful facility,” said Ryan Theule, Vice President of the Canyon Country campus. 

“The event highlights the open skies and instructional excellence offered at the campus and it showcases the amazing talent of students, faculty, and staff in a fun and family-friendly format. It’s always a fun night!”

At the event, COC faculty and students across a range of concentrations — including astronomy, chemistry, geography, geology and physics — will attempt to answer the question, “What does it take to be an explorer?”

“In past years we have enjoyed a variety of guest speakers and presentations by faculty,” said Anthony Michaelides, Acting Dean of the Canyon Country campus.

“This time we’ll also have students presenting to the audience, which gives them an opportunity to showcase some of their academic achievements.”

In addition, Matt Wallace of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be on hand to share information about NASA’s Mars Rovers — and will bring a working model rover to the event.

Attendees will also enjoy the chance to gaze at the stars through multiple telescopes.

“Demonstrating that science is fun and exciting is my passion,” said Teresa Ciardi, COC professor and astronomy/physical science program coordinator. “The Star Party is my favorite venue for providing people of all ages access to science.”

As always, the Star Party event is free and open to the public.

Students, families and community members alike are encouraged to attend the event and bring blankets and lawn chairs along with them. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase on site.
