Knight said he wants to move forward with installing an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, Auto-GCAS, into the future models of the F-35 joint strike fighter, according to a news release by his office.

“Introducing this technology now on the F-35 is not only low risk and affordable, but has the potential to save lives,” Knight wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis.

Knight also noted that the F-16 aircraft already has this system, and has saved lives as a result.

The Auto-GCAS has precise navigation, aircraft performance and digital terrain data to automatically maneuver an aircraft to prevent ground collisions, according to the press release.

“The F-35 is the future of air power for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps,” said Knight. “Installing this technology into the fleet will ensure the platform has safety standards to match its capabilities in combat. This technology has the potential to save lives and should be a top priority.”
