William Carlyle Falkenborg, 58, of Valencia, is suspected to have had a heart attack in the pool at Gold’s Gym on June 24, according to Lt. Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The death occurred around 5 p.m. in the pool, and a witness’ report indicates two employees administered CPR before Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene.

Fire personnel transported Falkenborg to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at at 5:34 p.m. The cause of death was listed as drowning, but Falkenborg had a medical condition that likely played a factor, officials said.

Falkenborg suffered from heart disease arteriosclerosis, according to the Coroner’s Office. Arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, “occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues,” according to the Mayo Clinic website.
