As a result of the vote, the speed limit is set to drop from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour along a six-mile section of the road between mile marker 8 and 17.5. In addition to the reduced speed limit, new guardrails will also be added to high-risk areas in an effort to prevent cars from leaving the road, according to Dave Perry, a deputy at Antonovich’s office.

“In particular… one area where guardrails are being put in is where these accidents happened,” said Perry.

Shortly after her daughter, 19-year-old Elena Kramer, was killed on Jan. 4, 2016 when her vehicle drifted onto the dirt shoulder and struck a tree, Cassandra Parks approached Supervisor Michael Antonovich with suggestions to make the road safer, said Rosaline Wayman, a spokeswoman for Antonovich’s office.

After the matter was brought to his attention, Antonovich directed the department of Public Works to coordinate with the California Highway Patrol and California Forest Services to conduct a safety study.

“(Safety concerns have) been well reported,” said Perry. “We were receiving outreach from the community.”

The public’s response to the changes enacted on Tuesday appears to be positive so far, according to Wayman.

“The community is very happy with the results,” she said. “They are looking forward to seeing the signs and the guardrails.”

However, Perry noted that the new safety measures are only the first step in an ongoing plan to improve road safety in the area.

“The department of public works is continuing to look into the matter and other possible ways to address safety concerns,” he said.

County Officials Lowering Speed Limit On Stretch Of Bouquet Canyon Road

  1. Speed limits need to be lowered on multiple streets throughout Santa Clarita! Soledad, Bouquet, Whites, Plum etc. should be lowered to 40! To many residents and business on these roads. Also limits should be lowered to 15 by schools when kids are present, this has helped greatly in Nevada.

    • I agree with speed limits being lowered and to add to these areas I would like to also have speeds lowered in Agua Dulce. This rural town with Vasquez Park on Escondido where people park off the road (with speed limit of 45 and 50 MPH) is dangerous the speed limit should be lowered to 40 MPH. Horse back riders, hikers share the roads thru out Agua Dulce on Agua Dulce Canyon Rd and Escondido Cyn Rd needs to be lowered. If Newhall Road can be 40 MPH a rural town with 2 lane road most definitely should be lowered.

  2. Opening Vasquez Canyon Road would take some of the traffic off Bouquet Canyon Road which could help. Less motorists = less accidents. Lowering the speed limit just increases the fine for the speeders and now the safe drivers are forced to burn up more time to get through the canyon.

    • The speed limit is being lowered in the turns where the most crashes are occurring. You can not even reach 45 in the turns which is what they are lowering it too along with many other changes to help the safe drivers who are being pushed through the canyon.

    • Mark, you keep opening your mouth and keep showing to the world how ignorant you really are.
Seriously? Let’s not reduce the speed and just let motorists die. Yeah, real good Mark.

  3. It would help to know also what the nearest cross streets are. I have no idea where mile markers 8 and 17.5 are.

    And 17.5 – 8 = 9.5. How does 9.5 translate into a 6 mile stretch of road?

  4. About time. People drive Bouquet like it is the Indianapolis Speedway. At our local corner on Bouquet, we’ve had two serious accidents in the last several months. People drive 65-75 miles an hour regularly and street racing by young people is a real concern. Where is law enforcement? I realize budgets are tight, but we can’t allow our safety to be compromised for the thrill seekers wanting to drive at excessive speed.

  5. Law enforcement is almost non- existent. Pass and change as many laws as you want. But if there is no accountability what does it matter? It’s a free-for-all out there.

  6. I am sorry for the loss of these two young people. I can only imagine the pain. I Drive Bouquet Canyon regularly. What I do not understand is why are we paying out some exorbitant amount of money, because a young person was not paying attention and ran off the road side? You must pay attention while going through bouquet. It is imperative that you follow the speed limit signs, and slow down at the curves. This is a common-sense Road! If you don’t have common sense stay off bouquet!
