Cowboys Unable To Tame Tigers; Fall 42-27 In Season Opener

Canyon Cowboys lose their season opening game 42-27 in a home, non-conference game against San Fernando High School. The Cowboys couldn’t stop the run as the Tigers used a stable of running backs to move the ball up and down the field to the tune of four rushing touchdowns.

The stadium was filled with excitement as the Cowboys took the field for their first game of the 2018-2019 high school football season. Coming off a 6th place finish in Foothill League last year, Canyon has their focus set on doing much better this season with quarterback Aydyn Litz under center.

Showing flashes of excellence, the Cowboys offense got on the board first and did their best to keep the game competitive. Aydyn Litz, who tallied his first varsity start in the game, had a solid performance despite throwing two interceptions (one unintentionally caused by a receiver), and helped keep the Cowboys alive with a few clutch third down passes.

Unfortunately, Canyon’s defense couldn’t get the job done as San Fernando scored not only four rushing touchdowns, but another two in the air. After the game, when asked about what Canyon needs to do to improve their run defense, Head Coach Rich Gutierrez kept it simple saying, “Get better.”

Canyon looks to bounce back against the team that fellow Foothill League competitor West Ranch shutout in a big 42-point win this past Thursday.

“We have a lot of work to do. Looking at everything, offensively, defensively, I think we just gotta find where we made the most mistakes and try and fill those gaps,” Coach Gutierrez said after the game. He continued, “Obviously, I wish we could have made a little more stops. I thought our offense was surging toward the end, but you gotta stop the run.”

With Zero Week coming to a close, each Foothill League team has completed at least their first game to get the season started. The Cowboys look ahead to Friday, August 31 where they will hit the road for their first away game of the year to play Burroughs at 7pm.
