The Rod Bennett Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund was created by his wife, Valerie Pryor, administrative services manager and chief financial officer at Castaic Lake Water Agency, who aims that the scholarship benefit Hart District students who have studied in a district music program for at least two years, preferably at Arroyo Seco Junior High or Saugus High School, and plan to attend a two- or four-year college.
“It’s heartening to know how much the community cared for Rod, and I’m very grateful,” she said. “I’m anxious to find out who the first scholarships will be awarded to. I’d like to see those kids grow up to do great things, like Rod did, and keep his legacy alive.”
The scholarship launched earlier this month in honor of late Arroyo Seco Junior High math teacher and band director Rod Bennett, who was cycling when he was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver in May 2016. The driver, Lucas Guidroz, 26, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison.
All college-bound seniors are encouraged to apply, but those who plan to major in music and/or music education will receive preference.
The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.. No late applications will be accepted.
The two $2,000 Rod Bennett Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to two students at the individual Hart schools’ Senior Awards ceremonies in May.
