Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) deputies knocked on each door and verified the registrants’ residence of record and compliance with all state law requirements, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Deputies were unable to confirm some of the residence addresses on record, and additional follow up will be required,” Miller said.

This operation worked in tandem with a county-wide effort, that began in early September, called “Operation Safe Halloween.”

Probation Department personnel notified sex-offenders on probation that they are not allowed to have decorations, hand out candy or welcome children in any manner during the days leading up to Halloween, according to a county officials.

After the offenders were notified, they were set to be visited by probation officers to make sure that they were compliant with the restrictions.

During these visits, officers also looked for any evidence that indicated that a probationer was in possession of items such as weapons, illegal drugs or child pornography, which would be in violation of their probation.

LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who rode along with probation officers during an early morning compliance check Monday, gave her support with a post on Twitter.

“‘By conducting these compliance checks, it’s just another way that Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies can help keep our community safe,” said Crime Prevention Unit Lieutenant Chuck Becerra. “We want to make sure that registered sex offenders are living where they say they are.”

KHTS has a Santa Clarita sex offender database and map, a community service the station publishes throughout the year to inform residents.

  1. One-hundred-ninety REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS in Santa Clarita, Now that is SCARY>>>>

  2. Thank you to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s for letting secoffenders know we are watching them.

  3. In California, a person required to register as a s3x offender who is NOT on parole or probation has no obligation to speak to law enforcement regarding their registration status outside of their annual in-person registration within 5 days of their birthday, or when they establish a new residence. Zero. None.

290 registrants NOT on parole or probation should not speak with law enforcement during these operations – not even answer the door, absent a current warrant.

  4. So this operation is so vital to public safety that it serves as a PR stunt for (female) politicians….. riiiiight!
