The body of a man was discovered last night in the Sand Canyon area, which was forced to evacuate Saturday due to the Sand Fire.

The man, whose identity is not available as of 7:20 a.m. Sunday, was discovered on Iron Canyon Rd. by a family friend who had attempted to check on the man after his significant other called KHTS in an attempt to learn his whereabouts.

Rob Hahnline with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station confirmed Sunday that detectives were investigating the report of a burned body within the evacuation zone, but have since turned over the investigation to homicide detectives.
Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau are investigating the death.
So far, 18 homes have been destroyed by the fire in the Sand Canyon area, according to fire officials. That number could increase as damage assessment teams report in.
