The driver of the vehicle, a Ford F150 truck, quickly let the dog out and gave it a bowl of water after deputies made contact with him.

The driver had the truck’s windows partially rolled down and was parked in the shade. But in California, it is still illegal to leave an animal in a hot car. By the time deputies responded to the incident, temperatures in Santa Clarita were above 95 degrees.

Within 10 minutes, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise more than 20 degrees past outdoor temperatures, even with a window open.

“After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees,” according to the Humane Society of the United States’ website. “Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die.”

As Southern California continues to break weather records, pets become more susceptible to succumb to the heat during hot summer days.

Heatstroke, sunburn and burned paws are common during extreme hot weather.

Because dogs and cats do not have the ability to sweat like humans do, leaving domesticated animals outdoors, in the sun or in the car can quickly cause them to die.

  1. This is so cruel and irresponsible! Whoever did this should not be allowed to own a dog.

  2. Shade or no shade…what is wrong with these people?!!! You can fix stupid, they have a license to drive, they need one to have a child or animal! No common sense!!!

  3. Besides a citation there should be an huge fine that will hit these people in the pocket book and maybe just maybe they will leave their dogs home when they go to work , shopping or what ever. No matter how much you warn them on the news, on social media to leave their dogs at home during the summer they still leave them in the car. Maybe a fine and jail time will get their attention.
