Oct. 1 marks the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to spread awareness, the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita is challenging residents with a 5k Purple Walk of Strength and “Purple Hair Dare” to support the cause.
The Purple Walk Of Strength is an event that benefits the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita. Walkers register to partake in a 3.1 mile course that raises proceeds for the center’s efforts in serving domestic violence victims.
This year’s Purple Walk is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at College of the Canyons.
Pre-registration is now open for $20 per walker and will be $25 on the day of the event. Special group discounts are available for teams of four at $60 per team, and will be an additional $10 per person after that.
Another challenge from the Domestic Violence Center to raise awareness is The Purple Hair Dare. This challenges supporters of all ages and genders to show their support by putting some purple flair in their hair.
Those who would like to partake in the challenge are encouraged to post a photo or video of their purple hair on social media with the hashtags #PurpleHairDare and #PurpleHairCauseICare.
Residents who dye their hair purple will be entered into a raffle to win a Lush Gift Set from local business Hello Gorgeous. To enter the raffle or sign up for the Domestic Violence Center’s Purple Walk of Strength click here.
“The Purple Hair Dare is a fun way to motivate the community to talk about the very serious subject of domestic violence. We hope it’ll also encourage other talks related to domestic violence such as dating violence and stalking,” says Linda Davies, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Center. “We want our residents to know that we’re here to help and offer more than the emergency shelter; we also have many free services and programs they can sign up for,”
The Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley has served the community with two locations in the area, including the Outreach Center in Newhall and an emergency 30-day shelter. For more information click here.
