June was born at Hollywood Presbyterian, but was soon transferred to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital due to several heart defects. June is currently battling an Interrupted Aortic Arch, Atrial Septal Defect and Ventricular Septal Defect.

Any of these conditions could stop the blood from flowing properly within the heart, and overall, throughout the body.

June’s first 10 days of life included two surgeries — one dedicated to repairing the aortic arch, and another second to place a shunt in her heart.

Recently, it has been discovered that a blood clot was found in her aorta. This will be the third surgery June will be going in for.

Doctors are then planning to have another surgery in 8 months in order to replace the shunt put in not too long ago.

Prior to her birth, Doctors hoped to not have to perform the Norwood Procedure, but soon after her first surgery, it was decided that she needed the shunt in order to correct the blood flow within her heart.

This procedure is performed shortly after birth, according to the UCSF Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery website. “It converts the right ventricle into the main ventricle pumping blood to both the lungs and the body. The main pulmonary artery and the aorta are connected and the main pulmonary artery is cut off from the two branching pulmonary arteries that direct blood to each side of the lungs.”

June’s parents, Rick and Danielle Thomas, both planned on going back to work after their baby girl was born — Rick as a Los Angeles Fire Station Paramedic, and Danielle as an RN.

The medical attention required by June has made that impossible, according to family members.

June’s grandfather, George Thomas, said the family is planning a second fundraiser at a restaurant he owns, Route 66 in Canyon Country. There is also a donation page set up dedicated to baby June here

“Since Rick has been off for a about a month, and Danielle not being able to go back to work, the expenses are building up,” George Thomas said. “The donation page will help with living expenses and any home-care June may need.”

Rick has been able to take some time off work and be there for his family.

“It is completely humbling to receive what we have. People we don’t know have donated and we just appreciate any help we can get” Rick said.

This has not only been a long medical journey for June’s parents and grandfather, but also for June’s big brother Jack.

Jack Thomas is 4, and handling his sister being in the hospital quite well, George said.

“We try and keep him away from the hospital as much as we can,” he said. “One day, I took him to the LA Zoo, and another day he went to see ‘Finding Dory.’”

Rick and Danielle’s friends have helped them tremendously by bringing their kids to play with Jack, and give Rick and Danielle a chance to talk with the surgeons.

There may be a lot going on for Jack, but he is very happy to be June’s big brother.

As of right now, baby June is doing well. Her chest was closed Friday, after being open after open heart surgery for 10 days.

June is still intubated on a breathing ventilator, but the family hopes she will be able to breathe on her own soon and eventually go home to be with her family.
