Law enforcement officials from both the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the CHP Newhall office made the arrests Dec. 29-31.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department DUI Enforcement Team deployed an effort to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers.

DUI Saturation Patrols and a Drivers License Checkpoint were deployed during the weekend between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests.

Under California’s driving under the influence laws, it’s illegal to operate a motor vehicle with any of the following blood alcohol concentration (BAC) percentages:

  • 0.08 percent or higher― 21 years old or older operating a regular passenger vehicle.
  • 0.04 percent or higher―operating a commercial vehicle.
  • 0.01 percent or higher―younger than 21 years old.

As the state continues to license commercial non-medical marijuana sales under provisions of Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, authorities have been more vigilant for marijuana-related DUI situations, according to officials.

Starting Dec. 27, the Office of Traffic Safety ran public awareness announcements concerning prescription medication DUI, and will continue to run them through much of January, according to LASD officials.

The emphasis of the “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze” campaign is to inform all residents, regardless of age and circumstance, to never drive while high.

In addition to marijuana, drives could be subject to DUI arrests in Santa Clarita and beyond if they are under the influence of prescription medications like sleep aids, tranquilizers, barbiturates, opiates and other painkillers, antidepressants, and even over-the-counter allergy or cough medications.

“It has taken more than 35 years to convince the vast majority of the public that driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous, illegal and socially unacceptable,” said Rhonda Craft, director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “With more dying on our roadways every day, we can’t afford to take that long when it comes to driving under the influence of prescription medications, marijuana, illicit drugs and even some over-the-counter medications.”

In 2011, California began allowing the Department of Motor Vehicles to immediately suspend the driver’s license of anyone suspected of driving under the influence, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles website.
