Throughout Sunday night, deputies were patrolling for drunk drivers and arrested five individuals who were under the influence. California Highway Patrol officers arrested another three individuals who were also under the influence, according to officials.

Both the CHP Newhall station and the SCV Sheriff’s Station had teamed up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for their “fans don’t let fans drive drunk” campaign.

“Drunk driving is completely avoidable, but continues to be a serious problem,” said CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley. “We want motorists to remember that drinking and driving is a choice that can have catastrophic results.”

After the 2017 Super Bowl, one person was killed in an alcohol-involved collision and 41 others were injured on California’s roadways, according to preliminary data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.

At least one Santa Clarita driver didn’t heed the warnings for 2018, and drove severely impaired.

“One woman, age 35, was found to be driving over three times the legal limit,” said Shirley Miller, public information officer, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station. “It’s very alarming that people continue to put their lives and others’ at risk.”

The legal blood-alcohol level to drive in California is 0.08.

But a significant number of fans chose a safer option to get home, Miller said.

Deputies patrolling near Santa Clarita bars and restaurants noticed many football fans using ride-share services such as Uber or Lyft to get home.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
