Over the Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend, 11 DUI arrests were made by California Highway Patrol Newhall area officers. Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies arrested another four individuals who were under the influence, according to officials.

One of the arrest was made by CHP officers Friday night at around 11 p.m. after an alleged drunk driver hit two deputy patrol vehicles on the southbound I-5 freeway, south of Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic, according to officials.

“The DUI suspect collided with the rear patrol car which pushed it into the front patrol car. The front patrol car sustained minor damage,” said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “(The deputies) were both out of their vehicles at the time of the incident.”

The Santa Clarita deputies were conducting an unrelated traffic stop at the time of the incident. CHP Newhall officers arrested the alleged drunk driver, according to Miller.

“We try to get as many patrol officers out there as we can,” CHP Officer Josh Greengard said. “We want to be well equipped for the servicing of the public.”

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s officials said responsible commuting helped lower the arrest numbers in the city.

“Our deputies did not see a lot of DUI cases,” said Miller. “We really appreciate the community taking responsibility and using ride sharing.”

The use of ride calling apps such as Uber and Lyft is encouraged by law enforcement officials ahead of any major event where people may drink heavily.

“Drunk driving is completely avoidable, but continues to be a serious problem,” said CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley in a previous KHTS story. “We want motorists to remember that drinking and driving is a choice that can have catastrophic results.”
