App developers at Early Warning Labs are in the process of creating the app, which would warn users of an oncoming earthquake moments before impact – a period of time that has been described by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as “precious seconds that save lives.”

Soon, Santa Clarita residents will potentially be able to be warned about incoming shakes through their devices, including Amazon and Google home devices.

Early Warning Labs Founder Josh Bashioum said,  “We’re getting more and more past due for the ‘Big One,’ and the estimates that the USGS and some universities have found  – they say 2,000 people will die and there will be 50,000-plus injuries.”

Trump’s cuts to the federal budget left no room for funding for development of this system, but support from multiple representatives, universities and local governments have all gathered behind the project, enough to keep it funded and functioning.

The Santa Monica-based company has already installed its system in a Marina Del Rey building complete with 850 sensors already functioning.

“We’ll calculate how bad the shaking will be, where this building is, and how long it’s going to be until it gets here and then we send the alert… all within about a second to two seconds,” said Bashioum.

The advanced warning will trigger a series of events to ensure escape routes and safety, including opening elevators, electronic garage doors and turning off gas lines.

The app will be available for the smartphone and will send a push alert about earthquakes but will not be able to override a device that’s off or silent.

Early Warning Labs is en route for a wide release of the app as well as the residential and commercial notification system by this upcoming summer.

Users of the app include the L.A. Metro, the L.A. County Fire Department, Cedars-Sinai Hospital and LAX.
