Individuals who suffer from chronic headaches have likely seen a myriad of doctors in an effort to end their pain, only to be given a “cocktail” of pills to mask it instead, according to Dr. Dean Schweitzer, DDS, of Valencia Headache Care in Santa Clarita.

Taking over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen for an extended period of time can cause other health issues, while prescription narcotics can lead to dependency and addiction.
“The goal is not to have to take pain medication to control your pain,” Schweitzer said. “We need to get to the source of the problem.”
Recent studies have shown that the majority of chronic headache and migraine pain is actually a result of an imperceptible imbalance in the person’s bite, which Schweitzer noted takes a dentist’s trained eye to be able to detect.

“You can’t feel the imbalance (so) you don’t know it’s there,” he explained. “Only a dentist can understand and provide (the proper) treatment.”
While chronic headaches are estimated to keep Americans home from work more than 100 million days per year nationally, treatment is available without surgery, medication or dental work, according to Schweitzer.
“The solution doesn’t involve anything invasive,” he said. “It involves precisely determining where the imbalances are and adjusting those imbalances in a very easy, very quick, very imperceptible way over a period of about 12 weeks.”
Patients at Valencia Headache Care in Santa Clarita see Schweitzer about once a week for adjustments combined with rehabilitative therapy to restore the health of the facial muscles causing their imbalance.
“In our face we have muscles (that) control our bite, so if our bite is out of balance — though you can’t feel it, it’s very imperceptible — the muscles are constantly straining and constricted,” Schweitzer explained. “And it results in headache pain.”
After just a few treatment sessions at Valencia Headache Care, most patients start to feel relief, according to Schweitzer.
“Almost immediately, after the first one or two therapies with us, they start to begin to realize, ‘Wow, this is really going to work for me,” he said. “Then at the end of that time, and even before that time, patients’ headaches just basically disappear.”
Schweitzer noted the treatment available at Valencia Headache Care in Santa Clarita has a 93 percent success rate nationally, adding, “At our practice, that percentage of success is even higher.”
