Koon, 67, is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 14 at the Santa Clarita Courthouse on one misdemeanor count each of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and driving with a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content, according to Ricardo Santiago of the District Attorney’s Office.

On May 1 around 3:30 p.m., Koon was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving when he crashed his 1999 GMC Yukon into a Ford Super Duty pickup on Heather Lane, west of Greenwood Place, according to Officer Eric Priessman of the California Highway Patrol.

Koon was reportedly the only person in the vehicle and suffered no visible injuries, nor claimed any injuries from the crash, according to Priessman.

“He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and taken in custody,” said Priessman. “Mr. Koon remained polite and cooperative throughout the incident.”

Koon submitted to a blood test, which found that he was over the legal blood-alcohol content limit by a “decent amount,” according to officials.

He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, and has since been released.

Koon served time in prison for his involvement in the Rodney King beating after being charged with using excessive force.

Koon and several other officers were indicted that same year on federal civil rights charges, and he was convicted and sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

  1. While not much a believer in Karma, I find that sometimes it
happens to someone that truly deserves a big dose anyway.

  2. This is news huh? Of all the DUI’s in california you choose this one. Smh.

    • Kinda is newsworthy. First, its here in the SCV. Not all the DUI’s in CA are within the home range of our local newspaper. Secondly, whether he likes it or not, and whether we agree or disagree with what happened to him, Mr Koons is now a public figure. His arrest is newsworthy, to the extent that anyone is truly “newsworthy.” Maybe you think that this is an attempt to smear the image of a former officer, to which I would reply, a jury thought his actions did that. Maybe you think that this never should have been an issue in the first place and he was just doing his job. Again, the jury didn’t agree. If your respect for him is because of his former status as an officer of the law, then understand that the law is what eventually brought him low, back in the 90s, and again this week. But regardless, the Signal is just doing their job, and reading this, they seemed to be somewhat fair minded about it and reserving judgement.

  3. You know that was our truck he hit. We have given him ample of time to come by and apologize.( he has not) I truly hope he gets his life in order…Prayers

  4. Did you know the Santa Clarita Valley is known for their DUIs? Many of the vallies are known for something, ours are DUIs. Perhaps the names of each person and where they were caught should be listed. Koon isn’t a celebrity? But I bet he was very popular in prison.
