David Bernstein was lying in Henry Mayo Hospital Thursday, fighting to be well enough to see his twin seniors graduate high school.

“My twins, Michael and Valerie were born premature and had a slow start in life,” Bernstein said. “I was very upset, I was just really upset after that, because I know we both been looking forward to this they’ve done so well over the years.”

When the nurses at Henry Mayo found out about him missing the graduation, they moved him to a different room decorated with balloons and banners, and brought some tiny bundt cakes.

“They were sneaky. They told me I was going to another room, and I had no idea it was all decorated,” Bernstein said. “We really appreciate what they did.”

The hospital was able to connect a livestream of the Saugus graduation to Bernstein’s room, enabling him to feel like he was there in person.

“People sometimes say it’s a small community hospital, but let me tell you something, sometimes that’s the best,” said Diane Bernstein, his wife. “They’re a part of our community. They know us. They really try and take care all of us, and they really do an excellent job. I’m really proud of this hospital.”
