Between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., the College of the Canyons campus parking lot in Valencia will be host to a firework demo for firefighters tasked with monitoring future shows.

LACoFD fire prevention captains and inspectors will be given a day of Aerial Firework Fire Safety Officer training that will educate them about certain hazards to be aware of when assigned to firework displays or shows.

Maria Grycan, community service liaison for LACoFD, provided some insight to training purpose and procedures:

“It’s a training class for our fire prevention captains and inspectors, who will be assigned to firework displays,” said Grycan. “Part of that training includes firing actual fireworks. There will be approximately 50 to 100 aerial fireworks intermittently used during the time frame of 1:00 pm to 3:00 p.m.

Grycan recently published a statement on social media to inform Santa Clarita residents near the Valencia COC campus, warning them about loud booming sounds during the training.

“People in the area will actually be hearing something so we just want to let people know,” added Grycan.

Deputies at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were also notified about the training so they can let residents who might call to report what they are hearing during the course of training.

Santa Clarita residents near the COC Valencia campus are urged to make arrangements for pets that might be affected by noise from firework training.

John Guinto, fire captain at Station 124, confirmed firefighters from Station 124 will be on-standby during the training for safety precautions.

“It’s a class for the fire safety officers when they do standby at firework shows,” said Guinto. “Lecture will be from 8 a.m. to noon in class followed by a minor display from 1-3 p.m. in the parking lot. 124 will be there on standby, along with fire safety officers who will be giving the class.”
