Former LASD Cadet Charged With Emptying, Burning Newhall ATM Returns To Court

A former LASD cadet charged with stealing thousands of dollars from a Wells Fargo ATM in Newhall, and returning days later to burn the ATM machine, returned to court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing setting.

Julio Cesar Jimenez, 35, has been charged with one felony count each for grand theft, arson of property of another and vandalism over $400, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

While on duty as a Brinks security guard, Jimenez allegedly stole the money he was supposed to deliver on Nov. 28, 2017, according to the the criminal complaint. Jimenez later returned on Dec. 1, 2017 to burn the ATM machine.

The complaint alleges a loss that exceeded $65,000.

After the incident occured, Jimenez began working for the Sheriff’s department on Dec. 18, and was in the first phase of the 22-week academy training period when sheriff’s officials discovered his potential involvement in the crimes, according to Cpt. Darren Harris of LASD.

Jimenez was booked, Feb. 15, on suspicion of theft, embezzlement and arson. Later that day, Jimenez posted bail.

If convicted as charged, Jimenez faces a possible maximum sentence of more than five years in prison.

Jimenez is expected back in court on Oct. 24 for a preliminary hearing.
