After 13 consecutive years of providing Thanksgiving meals to the Santa Clarita community, the “Giving Thanks Giving” event was cancelled for 2018, according to the event’s Facebook group, Giving Thanksgiving SCV.

Hello GTG Friends. We wanted to share the sad news that GTG Newhall is not happening this year. We always had a desire to carry on what Roger and Shannon from Newhall Bike Co started years ago every year but due to many of our leaders feeling a heavy burden from other events we decided to cancel this year,” the post read.

Since the cancellation of the event, other groups in the community are attempting to fill the void left by the annual tradition.

Real Life Church’s Canyon Country congregation has organized “2018 Give-a-Turkey,” in an effort to provide Thanksgiving meals for 200 families in Santa Clarita.

The group plans to accept donations, assemble the meal kits and deliver the meals throughout Sunday, Nov. 18.

More information about opportunities to donate or volunteer for “2018 Give-a-Turkey” can be found here.

Castaic Community Church, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, plans to host “Castaic Community Thanksgiving,” a free Thanksgiving dinner available on a first come, first serve basis.

The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 18 in the Castaic Sports Complex Gymnasium and will feature music and games for kids.

Registration information for the “Castaic Community Thanksgiving” can be found here.

The SCV Senior Center also plans to welcome our community’s senior citizens with a free Thanksgiving Party and Feast, hosted by the Castaic Lions Club and the William S. Hart Union School District.

The event is slated to feature dishes from some of the Santa Clarita Valley’s finest restaurants, as well as live music.

The feast is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, with doors scheduled to open at 10 a.m. and serving to begin at 11 a.m.

While the event is free, reservations are required and can be acquired by signing the reservation sheet in the SCV Senior Center’s lobby or by calling (661) 259-9444 and asking for a reservation.

Adding to the list of events, the City of Santa Clarita also plans to host a community dinner, offering a free complete Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and dessert to all members of the community.

The event, conducted in partnership with Parkway Motorcars, is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Newhall Community Center located at 22421 Market St.

In addition to the organized meals around the community this Thanksgiving, the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry is set to continue to provide opportunities for Santa Clarita residents to give back to those in need throughout the holiday season with donations of food or money.

This year, the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry has partnered with the Reape-Rickett Law Firm for a food drive accepting non-perishable food donations at their office through Nov. 16.

For more information on how to donate through the Reape-Rickett Law Firm visit the website.

Alternatively, information on how to donate through the Santa Clarita Food Pantry itself can be found on their website here.
