Valencia Nissan partnered with the Castaic Animal Shelter for an inaugural Shelter Pet Adoption Day, where residents were given the chance to take home over a dozen furry friends, including two dogs recovered from the raid earlier in the week on a cockfighting ring in Val Verde.

“This is Belle,” said Clare Store, the lead volunteer at the shelter, introducing an 8-year-old Australian Shepherd. “She actually came from that big bust we did in Val Verde, the cockfighting ring. We took quite a few dogs from there: 13 dogs.”
Despite coming from a less than ideal previous home, the 13 dogs were all put up for adoption, and volunteers say they are loving and excited.
“They’ve been really nice dogs and we hope they find really good homes,” Storey said. “One of which has already been adopted here. Another was adopted last night at the shelter. Belle is here, we’re giving her a day out.”
For those who missed the Valencia event, there is still an opportunity to adopt a dog. Nissan of Valencia has agreed to sponsor the cost of adoption fees via certificates that will be issued to cover fees for attendees who adopt from the Castaic Animal Shelter within two weeks of the event.
“Nissan are paying the adoption fees up to $165 and ours, typically the most expensive one would be $135, so they’re totally covered by Nissan,” said Karen Stepp, the shelter manager. “We’re very grateful and very happy. I hope we can do this event again because it’s obviously been very successful.”

“We do monthly adoptions and if we get one or two we’re thrilled,” Stepp said. “But we’ve got four adopted and we’re not even halfway through yet.”
She said the event provides a way for people interested in dog ownership to test the waters and gives an opportunity to meet the dogs without fear of being unable to adopt because of fees.
“If they don’t find something here, they can go to the shelter,” Stepp said. “They can find something there and Nissan will pay for that as well.”
