Kaden Schanfarber, who turns 3 in November, enjoys an odd affinity that amuses his family — a love of garbage trucks — as well as appreciation for his local waste-haulers.

Now at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, in an isolation unit much of the time while his body slowly recovers from chemotherapy infusions ravaging and then rebuilding his immune system, he still enjoys playing  with his trucks while he watches life through the hospital window, said family friend Allison Padula.

A GoFundMe page set up for Kaden is nearly halfway to its goal, and when Waste Management heard about what happened to Kaden -- who would often bring them a Gatorade and a bag of chips when they made their delivery in his neighborhood -- employees stopped by and let him ride in the truck and brought him a bag of toys.

Padula is hoping the community can stop by Del Taco  who’s hosting a fundraiser to support Kaden and his parents, who’ve both had to essentially stop working while they monitor Kaden and tend to his health care concerns.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Del Taco location on 26270 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus is donating a portion of its sales directly to the Schanfarber family.

Kaden’s life has changed dramatically since his diagnosis earlier this month, said Padula, who added while Kaden’s treatment has a 95 percent success rate, the toll that the next three years’ of treatments will be tough, including biopsies, spinal taps and long recuperative stays.

However, the family has been grateful for businesses and community members who’ve already shared a great deal of support, Padula said.

The family has a Facebook page where many have left messages of support for Kaden, also, known as “Kisses for Kaden.”
