Get Ready To “Fall Back” An Hour For Daylight Saving

At 2 a.m. the clocks will be falling back an hour meaning brighter mornings with darker evenings for most Americans. Places like Hawaii and Arizona are just a few who don’t participate in this annual change.

Daylight saving was not put into effect until World War l, when Germany instituted the time change to save on fuel costs for the war. Soon after Britain followed along with the time change and by 1918, when the United States joined the war and daylight saving soon followed.

After the war ended, Congress got rid of the time change in which caused farmers to dislike the idea because it required them to work out in the sun no matter what the time was on the clock. Woodrow Wilson also tried to defend daylight saving but his veto was overridden but Congress.

In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, provided that while states were not required to implement daylight saving time, they had to chose if they wanted to implement daylight saving time. The federal government took on the responsibility of choosing the “spring forward” and “fall back” days for changing clocks.

At first, daylight saving took up much less of the year than it does today. But Congress expanded the length of the daylight saving period in the 1970s and 1980s, and finally lengthened it from March to November in 2007.

Daylight saving time has its advantages, such as more post-work daylight in the summer. But the switch can be tough on the body clock as it can interfere with sleep especially for those who are night owls, according to a 2007 study in the journal BMC Biology.

A 2008 study published in the journal BMC Physiology suggest that people who like to stay up late at night have the most trouble shifting forward in the spring as while early risers struggle to “fall back” in autumn.
