Santos suffered a stroke Sunday, and was taken off life support Tuesday around 9 p.m., according to officials.

Santos was taken to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage after the stroke, which occurred before a showcase performance for the Golden Valley High cheer team at a summer camp.

Melissa Brewer, a cheer adviser for the high school who’s known Santos for years, said Wednesday morning, prior to his death, she was not authorized to release details of his medical condition.

Santos coached at several cheer programs in the Santa Clarita Valley, including Saugus and Canyon High Schools, as well.

“It was pretty unexpected and out of the blue for us,” said Brewer of the stroke.

A GoFundMe page has been created to assist the family during this time.

Brewer praised Santos’ impact on the community, which extended beyond Golden Valley High School, she said.

“Ed came in and he completely changed the Golden Valley cheer program,” said Brewer. “He took us from a squad of 34 to 71 cheerleaders.

“He’s the epitome of school spirit and school pride,” she added. “His impact is felt throughout the Golden Valley community, not just the program.”

He was a walk-on coach who joined the district in 2001, according to officials, starting at Canyon High.

  1. Wow….get your facts straight.
You said he is alive and passed on so many different times I have to find out what really has happened from a different news source.

  2. The article is not clear. Headline is that he had passed away, yet in the article it says “he’s breathing on his own” as of Wednesday morning, and recovering with his family. You probably should clear that up Perry.

  3. Seriously! The headline reads that this poor man died after being taken off life support. Then down in the article, it states that school officials state that as of Wednesday morning he was still in the hospital recovering and confirmed that he was breathing on his own.

  4. People are confused based on the article title and body. Please edit this to state he has indeed passed away. This reads as if he’s still alive.

  5. So did he die or is he alive? This article is doesn’t make sense at all

  6. He has passed as if of 1:15 today. On behalf of his family we would like to thank hua entire Golden Valley Family. Everyone has been so kind in this time of need.. Please keep his parents in your prayers.

    Thank you,
    Felicia Hernandez

  7. Perry Smith is the worst news writer. I don’t know why the Goldman’s keep him.

  8. Mark Rener That’ what Melissa Brewer said NOT Perry Smith. A great guy passed away and you are talking about the news writer????? Seriously???!
May he rest in peace, so sad

  9. Sadly I can confirm that Ed passed away this afternoon, surrounded in love by his family.

  10. The headline says “Golden Valley cheer coach dies”. The article says taken off life support and breathing on his own. I hope the later is the correct story. This is a horribly written article and probably hurtful to the family.

  11. Story is so sad…or not? I’m confused whether he was taken off life support because he was recovering or because he died–please clarify.
Either way, prayers to his family!

  12. Worst…..Reporting….Ever……
