“One of the things that, as far as a differentiation factor comparison to any other fitness facility, of course being affiliated with Henry Mayo, we are on the preventative care side,” said Sharlene Duzick, a center spokesperson. “Everyone that comes through our door is really going to be treated a little bit differently because we are a support system.”

When an individual first registers to become a new member, they are assessed by trainers so they can be taught the best exercises for their health and abilities.

“They go through a functional movement screen,” Duzick explained. “We have to understand what your mobility is like, any balance issues, core stability, muscle strength and endurance, and from there, we can really create the foundations of a solid workout plan.”

New members are also asked to take a questionnaire, which gives the trainers an idea of previous injuries and existing conditions that may limit their workouts in any way.

“Do you have any injuries, do you have any conditions that we need to take into consideration before helping essentially prescribe a workout plan for you?” explained Duzick. “You cannot just give a cookie cutter workout to everybody walking through the door.”

Another thing Henry Mayo Fitness & Health officials keep in mind when creating a workout for a member is what their ultimate fitness goals are.

“Somebody might be gravitating toward weight loss, somebody might just want their mobility back, somebody might want a little muscle strength and endurance because of their job and the capabilities they need to have,” said Duzick.

Duzick encouraged individuals to “experience the difference” between the Henry Mayo Fitness & Health Center and other gyms in the area, one of the differences being less crowds.

“We have the luxury of capping our membership, so when you do come in, we have that personalized service with each individual that walks through our door,” she said. “You don’t have to experience those crowds that a lot of other people do, where it is challenging to get on equipment.”

For those who aren’t sure if they would like to become a member, Duzick added guest passes are available for anyone who would like to try it out.

Henry Mayo Fitness & Health is open for residents of all ages who would like to join and be supported in their workouts.

“We have memberships starting at 13 all the way up until, I think our oldest member is 88,” said Duzick. “It is an unintimidating atmosphere, absolutely. This is very comforting for anybody walking through the door.”
