Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital will open a new kind of fitness center this summer, one designed to both help members stay healthy through exercise and improve the motor function of patients undergoing physical therapy.

“We’re going to provide them with a really comfortable place where they can exercise, where they can be helped by certified trainers,” said Patrick Moody, director of public relations and marketing for the hospital. “They don’t have to feel so intimidated by the environment.”
The purpose of the center, Moody said, is to improve the overall health of the Santa Clarita Valley.
“(We) have a huge incentive to keep people healthy,” he said, “and it has been shown that even a moderate amount of exercise can do that.”
The 53,000 square foot facility facility, originally slated to open June 1, was pushed back a month to July because of a lengthy process to acquire permits.
“We wanted to give an update to the community as to where we are,” Moody said.
The facility will be the only medically integrated fitness and health facility in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“What we hope is we can attract people who maybe haven’t been to a fitness facility before,” said Moody. “People who might be intimidated by (commercial gyms).”

One of the things that makes the facility unique is the qualified staff that will be assisting in both areas of the facility.
“All the staff here are certified and trained,” said, Bill Holstein, the general manager for the new facility at a signup event in January. “They all have degrees.”
Patients will be able to transition from the physical therapy section of the building to the fitness area as they regain function.
“We can do the start of the treatments in our facility,” said John Adam, the assistant director of rehab services at Henry Mayo, “but then we can, as they start to become more independant, move them out to the gym area.”
The Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Health and Fitness Center is located at 24525 Town Center Drive.
