During the latest “Senior Hour” on KHTS AM-1220, Rick Ferrante, president of Home Care Services, noted that socialization is an important part of an overall care plan for seniors.

While the professional caregivers at Home Care Services often provide in-home care for seniors with medical conditions who need help with activities of daily living and medication, there is also an important social aspect to their services.
“Unfortunately, everybody kind of forgets that social side and the health of somebody if that social side isn’t there,” Ferrante explained. “That upstairs, that mental part, oh my gosh, it could be just the complete game changer.”
A client of Home Care Services whose mother had been receiving care for months recently stopped by to thank Ferrante and the Home Care Services staff for their services.

“She had said, ‘When I first realized this (medical condition) was happening and I needed some help, I called you guys and I was all about these medical kinds of things,’” Ferrante recalled. “She said … ‘The thing I want to thank you for the most is actually the social side.’ She says, ‘Now my Mom is just engaged, and that was the most important thing for her.’”
In addition to the company of a caregiver, this much-needed social interaction can also be found by visiting the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, meeting with friends for cards and games, going to the theater, and much more, according to Ferrante.
“Part of the plan in terms of caring for my mom or dad, my grandmother, whoever it is, it has got to be more than just ramps and rails, medication, physical therapy, healthy eating,” he said. “(Those are) all important, but okay, let’s figure out times we’re going to go to the Senior Center.”
For example, Ferrante’s mother-in-law, an avid tennis player, recently had shoulder replacement surgery. Once she was medically cleared to play tennis again, she was back on the courts to finish her recovery.
“You could do all the rest of it right? You could exercise and take the right pills and go to the doctor and you could do all the things that they said,” Ferrante said. “But you know what’s going to drive her? Playing tennis with her friends.”
