On Oct. 6, 37-year-old Evans was on her way back from visiting her premature twin girls in the hospital when she was killed by a drunk driver just a mile from her home in Santa Clarita, leaving her grieving husband, Jacob, to care for all six of their young children.

“When Katie first died on October 6, and I was looking into a very uncertain future, I didn’t see any way that we would be able to stay here in Santa Clarita,” said Evans. “We don’t have any family here and I just didn’t see how I could survive.”

However, today Evans remains in Santa Clarita, raising his six children with the help of his eldest niece.

“She took a semester off of school so she could come and help,” said Evans. “She’s the only reason why I’m probably still alive.”

While Evans is receiving help from family, friends and community members, his fatherly love is presented through being familiar with the habits and actions that his children present.

Beginning with his twin daughters, Evans shared that both girls are over 13 pounds and that one of them, Hannah, recently passed a swallow test.

“She can eat some stuff by mouth so we’re hopeful that at some point we’ll be able to get the tube out of her stomach,” said Evans.

Although Hannah still has difficulties eating, she can sit up and is very interactive, although shy, according to Evans.

His other twin daughter, Sarah, is also interactive and has recently started to crawl.

As for his sons, Evans shared that they are doing remarkably well.

“They have good friends in the area, they’ve had people invite them over to their houses,” said Evans. “Now that they’re home for the summer, they’re enjoying not having to go to school.”

As the family gets ready for the summer, the Evans’ have beach trips planned with Jacob’s family, as well as Katie’s.

“It’ll be good for the kids to be able to go out and see their cousins,” said Evans.

Evans has been able to raise his children with much help and is grateful for the acts of kindness.

“I’m so grateful to the community who basically reached out and said, ‘We are your family,’ and has treated us like family and has been there to support us,” said Evans.
