Inaugural Great Escape Gala Raises $20K To Fight Domestic Violence

The Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley raised more than $20,000 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia to support operations.

Hundreds came out to bid on vacation-themed getaways that were donated by sponsors and supporters of the Domestic Violence Center.

The night had several emotional points, including when shelter advocates shared the story of Maddie, a client with the shelter last year who was driven home by an advocate after she had exhausted all the resources available, and then was killed by her abuser.

There was uplifting moments as well, like when five artists, several of whom had personal experiences with domestic violence, auctioned off pieces that helped raise nearly $10,000 alone with their paintings, which were part of the prize packages.

City Councilmember Bob Kellar talked about his experiences with domestic violence as a longtime member of the Los Angeles Police Department, and how the treatment of DV investigations has improved over time.

Lt. Ignacio Somoano of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station talked about the partnership that’s formed with the Domestic Violence Center locally, and how it’s helped survivors, as well as deputies.
