“We ask you that you respect life enough this holiday season to make sure that no one you know drives drunk,” Jacob Evans said, “so that everyone can enjoy that hope, light and life for a long time to come.”

Katie Evans was killed in October as she travelled home from visiting her premature twin daughters in the hospital, who were in the UCLA NICU at the time.

She was almost home when she was struck by an allegedly drunk driver in the intersection of Golden Valley Road and Valley Center Drive in Santa Clarita.

While Jacob, his four boys and two newborn girls have been forced to continue on with life, the family is still coping with the devastating loss, and are often struck by how much they miss Katie.

“I was Christmas shopping on Black Friday, trying to get some stuff for the kids,” Jacob said. “While I was standing in line it just hit me that I was doing this by myself for the first time, and it hurt.”

“I kind of had an emotional breakdown” he continued. “I kind of collapsed to the floor.”

Jacob also spoke about what life is like as a single parent who has lost his wife to drunk driving.

“Being a single parent is hard, and that first time that you don’t have that partner that you’ve grown really close with to be there for you, to help you plan for that Christmas for the kids…” Jacob said. “It’s not something I would wish on anyone, but with the help of friends, family, community, you can be a successful single parent, I’m told. I’m hoping that’s true.”

Jacob stated that this first holiday season without his wife will be the hardest of his life, but something positive the family can focus on is that Sarah, one of his twin daughters that has been in the NICU since her birth, has come home for the first time.

“We are so excited to have her here (and) she is doing really well,” said Jacob. “She’s been gaining weight, breathing and eating really well, and we think that in a few months she’ll be able to be completely cordless.”

He continued, “Sarah and I want to wish everyone in the community a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Years, and a happy any other holiday that you are celebrating. We hope that your season is full of hope, light and life.”
