Currently, there have been 100 cases reported with 30 hospitalizations. Six cases have been reported in the state of California, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Out of those 100 cases, 43 people specifically reported eating the cereal between March 3 to July 2.

Just before the agency announced the outbreak, the Kellogg company announced a recall of 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of the cereal with a “best if used by” date from June 14, 2018 through June 14, 2019, according to a statement from the government health watchdog agency.

However, on Friday the US Food and Drug Administration expanded that recall on the sweetened puffed wheat cereal.

“The FDA is advising consumers to not eat and to discard any Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal. This is regardless of size or ‘best if used by’ dates. The recall notice accounts for all of the product that is on the market within the cereal’s estimated one year shelf-life. However, Honey Smacks products with earlier dates could also potentially be contaminated,” the agency website said.

Use or consumption of products contaminated with Salmonella may result in serious illness or fatal infections, according to CDC.

Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment, according to the CDC.

Kellogg launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks immediately after being contacted by the Food & Drug Administration and CDC.

The Kellogg company is asking people who purchased the potentially affected product to discard it and contact the company for a full refund.

No other Kellogg products are impacted by this recall.
