Wearing a red, pink and white striped dress, an 11-month-old terrier mix named Butter felt the grass beneath her paws for the very first time at a park in Santa Clarita last week.

Saved from an unimaginable future as a “bait dog” in a dogfighting ring, Butter instead got to roll around in the grass gleefully, sunshine on her face, while she took the spotlight as the KHTS Adoptable Pet of the Week.
“She’s loving the grass right now because she’s never seen grass before,” said Alexa Shadid, director of the Agua Dulce-based nonprofit Saving Little Strays Rescue, as she watched. “She’s just running around and rolling around in it.”

A sweet, cuddly and playful pup, Butter loves being held and gets along well with kids and other animals.
“She loves every other animal possible,” Shadid said, noting that Butter has played with dogs, cats, chickens and even ducks. “She loves to be held and just loved. She’s very sweet.”
Because of her past, Butter is nervous around new people and unfamiliar surroundings, so her future adopters would need to take things slow in the beginning.
“It took her about 10 minutes to get to know me, and now she’s playing with me, letting me hold her,” Shadid said. “Just be cautious in the beginning and let her ease into whatever you want her to do.”

As Shadid talked, Butter was perfectly content to be held and occasionally turned her head to nose-kiss her rescuer.
“She, and along with a bunch of other dogs that we have, would be wonderful pets for you,” Shadid said. “They all are amazing, wonderful dogs and they would be loved by anybody. They just all need homes.”
About the Adoption Process at Saving Little Strays Rescue
The rescue dogs at Saving Little Strays Rescue are all spayed or neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and dewormed.
The adoption fee, which helps the rescue cover these types of veterinary expenses, ranges depending on the dog’s age. For puppies over four months old and adult dogs, the fee is $350, with seniors set at $250 and puppies at $400.
Fees are tax deductible and include a harness and leash, toys, food, training if needed, and a Petsmart coupon book containing over $400 in savings.
Potential adopters can contact the rescue to set up a “meet and greet” and home check, or stop by the Petsmart on Pico Canyon Road in Stevenson Ranch on Saturdays from 12 to 6 p.m. for the rescue’s weekly adoption days.
