When mellow senior dog Louie started to show signs of an illness, his former family of eight years decided to surrender him to the Lancaster Animal Shelter instead of taking him to a veterinarian.

Abandoned and in pain, Louie’s future was suddenly much brighter when the staff at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary in Canyon Country decided to step in and make sure the nine-year-old yorkie/silky terrier mix got the care he needed.
After being diagnosed with Cushing’s — a chronic, but maintainable disease that affects hormone production — Louie’s condition is now under control with the help of a pill he takes in his food every morning.
“Once it’s treated, it’s basically under control; it just needs frequent checking up on,” explained Sara Scott, an adoption counselor at St. Bonnie’s. “If he got adopted, we would help out for awhile.”

Louie now spends his days as the sanctuary’s office dog, content to relax in staff members’ laps or stretch out at their feet.
“He is extremely laid back when it comes to people. He will let you dress him up and carry him around,” Scott said. “If he could have a couch to sit on with somebody, then he would be in heaven.”
When he’s not cuddling up with his favorite staffer or taking a nap in the sun, Louie loves treats, doing a little wiggle-dance when he’s being brushed and ambling around outside on leisurely walks.
Though he loves people and has a bit of separation anxiety when left alone, Louie would need to be the only dog in his future forever home. His ideal adopter would be an adult who could spend lots of time with him and would enjoy taking him out around town.
“He just needs the right person who’s going to be there and who doesn’t have any other dogs, who can deal with the medical issues,” Scott said. “Once he’s bonded to you, if you’re his favorite person, then that’s it — he’ll follow you anywhere. He gets so excited even when he hears your name… He’s just a really great dog.”
About the Adoption Process at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary
All of the animals at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary are spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Adoption fees for adult dogs (over one year old) is $250, which helps cover the cost of these veterinary expenses, as well as the day-to-day operation of the facility.
The first step in the adoption process at St. Bonnie’s is for all the members of the household — including other dogs — to stop by for a “meet and greet” with the pet and an adoption counselor. Next, a home check is scheduled so sanctuary staff can make sure the household is safe for the pet.
“After the ‘meet and greet’ goes well and the home check goes well,” said Adoption Counselor Victoria Lazarz, “they are free to come by and pick them up.”
