A bonded pair of sisters and the first bunnies to make their debut as the KHTS Adoptable Pets of the Week, Sugar and Spice were named to match their personalities.

“Sugar is a little bit sweeter, calmer, she likes to be pet and held,” said Haley Walsh, CEO and co-founder of Tails and Scales Animal Rescue in Santa Clarita. “Spice is friendly, but she has got some spunk. She likes to run around and jump and play.”
Walsh decided to step in and rescue the nearly one-year-old American shorthair bunnies when she learned of a possible hoarding situation about two months ago.

“A woman had multiple bunnies in her backyard, and unfortunately, they continued to breed and it became too overwhelming for her,” Walsh said. “She decided to surrender a couple bunnies — we took two, a couple other rescues took a few, and they’ve been with us since.”
Both Sugar and Spice are now spayed and in good health, and get along well with cats, guinea pigs and other small animals.
“They are pretty friendly bunnies, and they’re very curious of everything,” Walsh said. “They love to run around and play and have fun.”
The ideal adopter for Sugar and Spice would be someone who enjoys spending time with them outside their cage, and would supervise them around small children.

The bunnies’ cage would also need to be indoors in an air conditioned environment, but the pair could spend supervised play time outside in an enclosed, secure area with plenty of shade.
“Sugar and Spice would do really good in just about any home,” Walsh said. “Anybody who just likes to spend time with them and watch them hopping around, and are able to keep them at a cooler temperature would be just fine for them.”
About the Adoption Process at Tails and Scales Animal Rescue
Anyone interested in adopting Sugar and Spice can fill out an application so rescue volunteers can set up a “meet and greet” with the bunnies, followed by a home check.
The adoption fee for each bunny is $50, which would go toward veterinary expenses.
While fees are not currently tax deductible, Tails and Scales Animal Rescue — which has been rescuing dogs, cats, bunnies and reptiles since 2013 — is in the process of becoming a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
“We have just started our filing system for our 501(c)3 to become an official nonprofit,” Walsh said, noting that the rescue recently received its incorporation status. “Right now our donations are not tax deductible, but we’re almost there. However, we still function as a tax deductible, (meaning) everything that comes to us goes directly into our animals.”
