The broadcast of KHTS in Santa Clarita traveled across the globe in November, reaching the near Arctic Circle in Finland — over 5,000 miles away.

Antti Aaltonen is a 53-year-old lawyer and radio enthusiast from Finland that was able to hear a clear radio broadcasting from KHTS on Nov. 4, 2017.
Since the age of 11 years old, trying to tune in to far away radio stations has been one of Aaltonen’s favorite pastimes.
“Picking up distant radio stations has been my favorite hobby ever since I was only 11 years old,” said Aaltonen. “I must admit that North American stations have always been my favorite stations. I enjoy the programming very much and when reception conditions are favorable, the reception quality may be excellent.”
During a listening trip to the Arctic parts of Finland, which is approximately 175 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Aaltonen was able to tune into KHTS Radio, but unfortunately was only able to listen in for a couple minutes before the station faded away.
“Your signal was very strong, stable and clear, considering the huge distance between us,” said Aaltonen, addressing KHTS Radio. “This proves that your transmitting equipment is in very good shape.”
The equipment that was used to pick up the broadcast on that Saturday morning was a JRC NRD-535 communications receiver, which included an approximately 3,000-foot-long wire that runs through the forest of Finland along tree branches, directing it towards this part of the world.
“These long wires work beautifully on the AM band due to their directional qualities,” added Aaltonen. “In my opinion, broadcasting there in the U.S. is a lot better than broadcasting here in Finland.”
