Santa Clarita Valley residents were invited to purchase tickets to fly kites at the West Creek Park on Feb 4, with proceeds going towards programs aimed at helping children in unstable family situations.

Those who attended were given their own kite to soar over the Valencia field.

“This is a great kite festival, and the weather supported it, said one Santa Clarita resident enjoying the kite-flying weather. “This was organized for a great cause so we wanted to enjoy it.”

Varnica Singh, a representative for Santa Clarita Dynamic Desis, co-organized the kite flying event in an effort to bring people of different ethnicities together in support of Child Rights and  You.

“We wanted to do something for the community to give back and have a community event,” she said. “So we thought ‘why not a kite fest,’ because a kite represents that you can soar high in life. It’s a representation of joy.”

Representatives from CRY, an Orange County based non-profit focused on seeking resolutions for underprivileged children, collaborated with Singh to spread their mission in Santa Clarita.

Percy Presswalla, leader of the CRY in Orange County, wanted to help bring the joy of kite flying to the Santa Clarita Valley and raise awareness for underprivileged children.

“When Varinica reached out to me to host a CRY festival in Santa Clarita, we pitched in,” said Presswalla. “We had a fantastic collaboration. There was lots of teamwork we will definitely do this kind of event again.”

Families were also entertained by dancers from Shingari’s School of Rhythm, as they gave the audience a taste of Bollywood style choreography.

During the event, Presswalla gave Singh a certificate  on behalf of CRY for her efforts in organizing the kite fest, she took a moment to recognize her sponsors and thanked them.

“I’m thankful to Shangari school of rhythm, the kids that performed were awesome,” said Singh, “I would also like to thank Vitamin Simple and Chalk Couture for providing free giveaways and activities for families to enjoy.”

Kapeesh Poddar and Shaurya Tanwar, two boys came out to the festival to enjoy a day at the park flying kites and getting some quality time with their families.

“I came here today because I wanted to see how everybody would fly their kite said Poddar.”

“I came here to see the kites different shapes and patterns,” said Tanwar, I wanted to learn how to fly a kite.”
