As a large storm brings increased risk for flash floods throughout Santa Clarita and the rest of Southern California, Supervisor Kathryn Barger and the Los Angeles County Fire Department held a press conference to discuss storm conditions, safety and preparedness as well as planned evacuations in the Creek Fire burn areas.

Before the press conference was held, a statement was issued by the L.A. County Fire Department regarding the safety of residents living in recent burn areas.
“Due to the approaching rain, it is important to plan and prepare for the increased potential of flooding, mudslides, and debris run-off,” read the statement. “The Los Angeles County Fire Department urges residents living in areas prone to debris flow and mudslides to be prepared for danger.”
At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Barger, Supervisor for Los Angeles County’s Fifth District, discussed the impact the current storm is having on residents.
“These conditions are ripe for mud and debris flows,” said Barger. “While I understand that weather prediction is not a perfect science, and that some communities are under evacuation fatigue, it is important to listen to us when we tell you evacuate.”
Starting at 6 p.m., mandatory evacuations of areas affected by the Creek Fire and La Tuna Fires will be instated, as well as hard road closures in surrounding areas, according to officials.
LACoFD officials are urging residents to be ready for the potential dangers of the storm. Free sandbags are available to residents at all local fire stations.
Other tips for residents from LACoFD include knowing how to shut off utilities, avoiding crossing flooded areas, and finding high ground in the event that a person becomes isolated, according to officials.
