Las Vegas Shooting: Dreamation Craft Guild And Canyon High School To Hold Event For John Phippen’s Family

The Dreamation Craft Guild, in partnership with Canyon High School, is hosting a boutique next month to benefit John Phippen’s family.

During the Las Vegas shooting, Phippen and his son Travis began helping others during the shootout coming from the Mandalay Bay hotel.

With his son, a trained medic, they aided those who were struck or injured in the chaos.

While assisting the victims, John successfully jumped on top of a young woman to shield her from danger, but he was fatally shot in the back while protecting her.

The boutique was initially booked as a fundraiser for Canyon High School’s ASB, where Phippen’s youngest daughter attends, but then the Las Vegas shooting occurred.

Soon enough, Karry Kassin, founder of the Dreamation Craft Guild, found out and she spoke about the shooting with craft guild member Meghan Simpson.

It turned out Kassin’s sons grew up with Phippen’s daughter.

This prompted Kassin to speak with Canyon High School’s ASB about switching the benefit and they were “more than happy” with the switch.

The craft guild also spoke with the family to ensure they would be okay with the fundraising event.

“So here we are,” said Simpson, “we just hope that the boutique can raise enough money to help the family out, so on top of the pain of losing their father they don’t have to worry financially,”.

The fundraising boutique will consist of over 50 vendors, a raffle and silent auction.

All proceeds of the vendor fees, 5 percent of the total food truck sales, and all money raised from the raffle and auction will go directly to Phippen’s children.

“We hope that besides the proceeds the family will know that the community is behind them. That this isn’t just a news story on TV, but that it is a family that was just like any of us,” said Simpson.

The total number of those killed by the gunman remains at 59 — with more than 500 victims wounded — making the tragedy the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, according to CNN.

Authorities still don’t know what caused 64-year-old Stephen Paddock to open fire on the crowd of concert-goers at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival while Jason Aldean was performing just after 10 p.m.

What law enforcement officials do know is that Paddock had 23 weapons — including a handgun and multiple rifles, some with scopes on them — inside his 32nd floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino where he executed the mass shooting before killing himself, CNN reports.

“I hope that the community doesn’t forget about the Phippen family or any of the others that were at the festival, and we stay there for them for the long haul of healing,” said Simpson.

The fundraising event will be held on November 18 at Canyon High School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Main Gym.

Canyon High School is located at 19300 W. Nadal Street, Santa Clarita.
