Smoke near Castaic is being caused by spring training by the Los Angeles County Fire Department conducting annual spring drills with live fire at Pitchess Detention Center.

The trainings began Monday, June 4, and are expected to run through June 29. The training is scheduled from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the detention center in Castaic.
Fire officials are advising residents not to be alarmed by fire and smoke in the area.
The drills are an opportunity to allow as many as 100 firefighters to practice their skills, reinforce emergency communications, improve risk management decision making and strengthen fire attack skills, according to fire officials.

Fire Department officials will carefully monitor the weather each day and will cancel the training if weather conditions are not favorable.
Helicopters will also be practicing water drops as part of the exercise.
Engines may visit neighborhoods in and around the Castaic and Val Verde area to determine where fire resources would best be positioned to protect homes should fire impact the area.

I can’t believe this! High winds, low humidity and already a fire in Aqua Dulce? What are they thinking????
Wondering this myself. What was wrong with last month when we have higher humidity and lower temperatures? Not denying practice is important, but who is the one judging this thing for safety???
