“In the course of our office’s ongoing analysis of gun crimes, including for the time that those sentences actually serve, it came to our attention that as a system, it’s important for us to do better,” said Mike Feuer, Los Angeles City attorney.

The department will now prioritize inmates who are involved with the use of weapons because they pose the greatest threat to communities, according to McDonnell.

In LA County, the Sheriff’s Department is seeing an increased threat against schools where gun violence is at the root of these threats, according to officials.

“As of Aug. 15, our Criminal Intelligence Bureau has received and reviewed 129 tips and leads related to school threats since the beginning of the year,” said McDonnell.

About 31 percent of tips came from public high schools, 22 percent from public elementary and middle schools and 13 percent from public community colleges, according to McDonnell.

“About 64 percent of tips and leads included the use of guns or firearms,” said McDonnell. “Guns are clearly the weapon of choice.”

The rise in gun-related threats against schools nationwide prompted his decision to add over 50 additional charges to the list of major crime offenses.

The new list of both felony and misdemeanor levels includes charges such as carjacking, crimes against children, domestic violence, kidnapping, rape and violent assault/assault with a deadly weapon.

“When somebody is convicted of a gun-related offense, there are consequences for that action and that conviction,” said Feuer.

  1. “There are Consequences.”
    Words to live by.

  2. This won’t work in this state. Jimmy can’t even work with ICE how is he going to override trail by a liberal /socialist jury trial. You gotta be kidding. This ain’t Alabama. Legally arm the citizens and see school murderers disappear.

  3. But Domestic Violence and Sex Offenders get out in a fraction of their time… priorities…

  4. This is a very good idea. If criminals were required to serve their full sentences who knows how many people would still be alive. If Lee Harvey Oswald should have been serving time in Nov 1963 instead he killed the president. How many others have been killed by criminals who should have been in jail. “Book ‘im Dano”.
