Starting in early September, “Operation Safe Halloween” began with Probation Department personnel notifying sex-offenders on probation that they are not allowed to have decorations, hand out candy or welcome children in any manner during the days leading up to Halloween, according to a Los Angeles County Probation news release.

After the offenders were notified, they were set to be visited by probation officers to make sure that they were compliant with the restrictions.

During these visits, officers also looked for any evidence that indicated that a probationer was in possession of items such as weapons, illegal drugs or child pornography, which would be in violation of their probation.

LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who rode along with probation officers during an early morning compliance check Monday, gave her support with a post on Twitter.

“The LA County Probation Department is in full force this week ensuring the children in our communities are safe while they celebrate Halloween,” the tweet reads.

These visits began on Oct. 19, and since then 265 checks have been conducted throughout the county, 13 arrests have been made, and three guns have been seized, along with several rounds of ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

However, these are not the only items found by probation officers. Officials say that they have seized a crossbow, katana sword, binoculars, stun wand, and three box cutters.

Probationers have been arrested during this operation for a variety of reasons that break their probation, including living with minors and being in possession of a seven-inch blade.

“While our probation officers conduct compliance checks routinely, ‘Operation Safe Halloween’ is critically important as its goal is to protect one of our most valuable assets: our children,” said Reaver Bingham, LA County Chief Deputy Probation Officer.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
